Analogue Seismograms: WWSSN Microfiche Records Point of contact: Thomas Lee

The World-Wide Standardized Seismograph Network (WWSSN) consisted of about 130 seismic stations around the world monitoring the ground motion for natural (e.g., earthquakes) and artificial (e.g., nuclear explosion) events between 1961 and 1996 (Peterson & Hutt, 2014). The original recording medium was photographic paper, but copies have been made with microfiche.

Some of the microfiche images (courtesy of the Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory, USGS) have been digitized using DigitSeis software and are made available below. They are listed by station or by year. The microfiche image can be accessed using the link provided under the Component column.

Component: Component consists of three characters. The first two indicates the type of recording (LP for long period and SP for short period) and the last character is associated with the direction (E for east-west, N for north-south, and Z for vertical).

Date or Time: Date and Time columns combined give the start time of the record. Date is listed in MM/DD/YY format (month/day/year) and Time is listed in HH:MM format (hour:minute).

Digitized Data: Digitized Data is given either as DigitSeis output file (MATLAB .mat format) or multiple SAC files. A rough size of each type of data are provided. For DigitSeis output, version of DigitSeis with which the analysis was performed is also indicated and the file is best examined using DigitSeis with the same or higher version number. Note that the link to SAC is to a Google Folder where multiple SAC files with filename format StartTime_EndTime.SAC (e.g., 19640212_1515_19640212_1613.SAC) can be found and downloaded.

Station: Station is given by the station code. For a list of stations, see Peterson & Hutt (2014).

Time: Time is given in MM/DD/YY HH:MM format (month/day/year hour:minute).
